Why the US offered the resettlement?.
Ans:The US refugee admissions program or USRAP is a part of US endeavor to help refugees and displaced people throughout the world. Our aim is only humanitarian. USRAP respects democracy, independence and individual humane esteem. Every year The US resettles Hundreds of thousands of refugees and displaced people from all over the world. More than 26 hundred thousands (26 lakhs) of refugees and displaced have started to settle in the US since 1975. American people welcome this sort of people from all corners and help to reestablish in their community.
Resettlement in America may not be the ultimate option for all the Bhutanese refugees. Only the willing refugees will be involved in this program.

Who is eligible for the US refugee admission program or USRAP?
Ans: Those people are eligible who are forwarded by UNHCR for the program. UNHCR will find and decide whether the willing refugee has a right choice and where he is fit to resettle. The OPE will process ahead for resettlement to those refugees who are only forwarded by the UNHCR.


What are the other eligibility-criteria needed to resettle in America? Are education, training, experiences and age important?
Ans: Before permission is granted to refugees to resettle, their family situation is studied not the educational background, age…etc.

If the number of refugees is outnumbered than the offered number by the US then what will be the role of UNHCR or the US?
Ans: The US has expressed to resettle at least 60,000 Bhutanese refugees in the soil. The OPE will continue its process of resettlement until UNHCR forward the case. This American program possibly will continue for many years.

Do we have to stay in refugee camps in America?
Ans: There is no refugee camp in America. In the beginning, the refugees are kept in different big and small cities of America. The local volunteer organizations will help for the process. Many of the refugees will stay in the apartment in the beginning. When the refugee becomes able, s/he can manage the settlement of own choice. The refugee will get the necessary and prior help only in the community where s/he was first resettled.

After resettling in America will we be allowed to come to Nepal? Will we be allowed to go to Bhutan some day in future?
Ans: Yes. As soon as you arrive in America you can apply for refugee travel document. You can use this your as passport. You can visit Nepal, Bhutan and else where in the world after having the visa from the concerned country. After a year you will have legal rights to have a permanent resident of America. After five years of your stay in America you can apply for citizenship. This citizenship will allow you to have all the rights and facilities that the American citizens entertain. After then you can apply for the American passport with which you can visit to all those places where American are allowed to visit.

·1 To participate in USRAP no fee is required.
·2 To participate in USRAP it is individual’s choice. You are not forced to
resettle in America.
·3 Refugees are resettled in different cities and villages in America.
·4 After staying for a year refugees are allowed to apply for permanent
citizenship and after five years for a citizenship.

Ans:If you are interested to resettle in America or other countries, contact UNHCR and fill the “declaration of interest in resettlement” form and submit it to the UNHCR. This form can be availed by the UNHCR officials at work in the camps and in Damak or kathmandu UNHCR office.
